Clover’s sleek and robust hardware makes it a top POS for hospitality businesses. When we tested it, we found that the touchscreen was responsive, and the option for a fingerprint login – meaning staff can quickly get into the system during high-pressure services – was a standout feature.

Clover hasn’t undercooked the software either. Our testing found that both the front and back end interface surpassed expectations. Compared to competitors’ systems, Clover was more user friendly – tasks like adding products, creating categories, and setting up modifiers were a cinch. The Clover hardware was the most modern and sleek for me, out of all the EPOS systems we tested, I’d liken it to apple in the way it looks with glossy white colours. Using the system was really simple too, it’s laid out with icons and looks similar to an iPad, so there’s no issues with learning to use it – plus the finger print recognition was so useful and meant I could log in quicker than other system we tested. I was also really impressed with the back-end as it was really extensive and the app store was huge and had anything extra I might need like loyalty or reservation apps!

Our testing found Square to be an ideal fit for eateries of any size thanks to its well designed app-based interface, and its no-cost option which we ranked as the best free POS software. This makes it perfect for businesses with smaller budgets, such as pop-ups and food trucks, but equally, Square’s premium accessories and hardware are great for scaling restaurant chains.

Square POS comes with a fleet of help and support options, offering every avenue of assistance you’ll need – from live chat to a forum where you can discuss pain points with fellow restaurateurs (though we would have liked to have seen a training mode for new staff).

We found Square to be easy to use with an intuitive interface. However, that simplicity does come at the cost of a few more sophisticated extras. We found there was no option to track the ingredients being used in dishes – something Clover can do – and no detailed cost management tools, which Lightspeed Restaurant excels in.

Similarly, its Plus plan is about average, but it has a very solid free plan option. The Square Register, while not cheap, is fairly priced for a dual screen till system. While they aren’t the lowest prices, they’re not particularly aggressive either, and you know what you’re getting – ideal for newer businesses.

I’m a huge fan of the Square interface. When we tested it on the an iPad, I found it really easy to navigate as everything was clearly labelled and the interface was really modern and clean looking, which made it even easier to find all the functions I needed. I especially like that I could start with the free plan to try it out for an extended period and then if I’m happy and want more I can upgrade and start paying, it’s mean you’re not under any pressure to purchase it immediately as the free plan still has great features!

Even Lightspeed’s Essential plan is pricey compared to its competitors’ entry level plans, and the provider is less than transparent when it comes to its hardware prices and transaction fees. You’ll have to contact Lightspeed directly to get a full picture, but its software pricing certainly isn’t cheap. However, Lightspeed does offer a demo of the software, so you can try it out before committing.

What our researchers think

Although Lightspeed may start slightly higher in monthly price than some other options it’s well worth the price. When I tested the front-end I was really impressed with how easy and quick it was to take an order and the fact that this could be done all through an iPad, means that you can be on the go and speed up serving times. The customer management tools were some of the best I’ve seen in any platform and allow you to create email or SMS marketing, loyalty schemes and even customer segmenting!

In regards to its software, the base plan’s price is pretty average compared to competitors… but with a caveat. Many features – like online ordering and the reservation system – cost extra, with their own individual add-on prices. These could really start to add up if you need a stack of them. What I love about TouchBistro is the ability to pick and choose what features you want. You don’t have to pay extra for something that you won’t actually need and it means you’re getting a package tailored to you but what’s great is that their pricing is still completely transparent. The EPOS system was simple to use and places you on the floor plan page as soon as you log in which is great for ordering quickly and I also found that the menu and stock customisation was one of the best I’ve seen.

Epos Now have recently released a new and updated terminal and it has a huge HD screen, which means you can see everything really clearly and also a crystal clear customer facing screen, which can help speed up orders as they can see what they’re ordering. They have tonnes of features in the back-end to create loyalty programmes and floor plans and being able to access this from the terminal itself is something that only very few platforms actually allow.
